The Desert. On the one hand, it can be harsh and inhospitable. It can make you feel small and exposed. On the other, hand there is great beauty and strength all around you, if you just know where to look. The song is ultimately about vulnerability. About the comforts we look for and the things we cling to in times of crisis. Do we have to let go of who we were to get to where we need to go? Does there come a time when have to abandon our dreams or lie to ourselves to survive? How do we stay hopeful in a cynical world? Are we still burning? Or turning to dust? Ashes to ashes. Rain to rust.
